Creating a sustainable and joyful lakeside playground at Jinji Lake Right Bank Street “LOHAS” Park, Suzhou, China

      Project background and goals

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of Suzhou Industrial Park, Jinji Lake Right Bank Street underwent a major upgrade. A key highlight of this renewal is the lakeside LOHAS Playground, designed to provide families with a healthy, joyful, and sustainable outdoor play space. The project reflects the Park’s vision of a livable, educational, and recreational city environment, while staying true to its core values of low carbon emissions, energy efficiency, and environmental protection.

The playground caters to children aged 2–12, as well as their parents and caregivers:

      • Ages 2–5: A sensory play zone with colorful activities that stimulate the five senses, nurture creativity, and encourage imaginative play.

      • Ages 5–12: Multiple climbing structures at varying heights challenge children to test their limits, strengthen coordination, and develop teamwork and social skills.

      • Parents: Comfortable shaded seating beneath large trees allows parents to supervise children while enjoying moments of leisure.

      Design vision and features

The playground was inspired by the LOHAS (Lifestyles Of Health And Sustainability) philosophy, focusing on health, happiness, and sustainability. Natural elements are integrated throughout the design, including a sand play area, expansive lake views, and shaded seating areas. Modular play structures with customizable components and colors were used to create a flexible, adaptable design that meets the park’s long-term needs.

      Uniqueness and challenges

      • Balancing the scenic value of a lakeside location with essential safety requirements

      • Creating distinct play experiences for different age groups within a compact footprint

      • Combining Suzhou Industrial Park’s 30-year development vision with its child-friendly city initiative in one cohesive project

      HAGS’ role
