Assembly
What thicknesses are required for the shock-absorbing surface around a play equipment?
If you use loose fill material, sand or wood chip, it must be either 30 cm or 40 cm. If the play equipment has a fall height of a maximum of 200 cm then 30 cm applies, if the equpment has a fall height of more than 200 cm and a maximum of 300 cm then 40 cm applies.
For synthetic products, such as artificial grass, rubber tiles or cast-in-place rubber or cork coverings, the free fall height of the equipment is taken as a starting point, and then the selected surface must have at least the same critical fall height as the free fall height of the equipment. Different suppliers have different thicknesses for different heights.
Is a shock-absorbing surface always required around play equipment?
The general answer is that for all playground equipment with a free fall height of 60cm or higher, or if the equipment has a "forced movement" (swings, slides, ziplines, roundabouts or seesaws) then there must be a shock-absorbing surface that complies with the equipment's fall height or requirements in SSEN 1176. For Play equipment with a fall height lower than 60 cm and without "forced movement", there are no requirements for shock absorption. However, HAGS always recommends at least grass as a base.
The fall space for play equipment, can they overlap with each other for two different equipment?
The general answer is that fall spaces may overlap, but not between implements that have "a compelling movement", these must have their own space. However, it is always the equipment that has the highest requirement that determines how large any overlap may be.
Can HAGS play equipment be mounted on ceiling joists even if there is a waterproofing layer that must not be damaged?
Generally speaking and in the vast majority of cases, this can be solved, but it will be a special project.
Can you install a HAGS swing seat in a swing frame that is not made by HAGS?
It works in most cases, but it is important that they are installed correctly and that the swing stand they are mounted in complies with the general requirements set for swings in SSEN 1176 regarding strength etc.
Can you mount the HAGS group swing seat Nestor in all HAGS swings, where there are currently 2 swing seats?
The Nestor swing seat can be mounted in all HAGS Mira, Goro and Turo swing frames, but it is a special beam made for the Nestor or Bravo swing seats. So for older swing frames, the beam needs to be replaced.
Is a fence always required around swings, and how should they be placed?
The general answer is NO, fences around swings are not required. However, depending on how the swing is positioned on the playground, there may sometimes be an additional need to protect against accidental contact, or collision with a swing seat. In these cases, it is mainly from the sides that the need can be found. If fences are mounted, they must sit with an extra space outside the fall space, at least 100 cm outside the end of the fall space in the swing direction, and on the sides at least 150 cm from the outside of the swing seat. See examples for HAGS swings below. Add 100 cm either way in the swing direction, giving a total distance of 990 cm for the example shown below. The extra space does not need to have a shock-absorbing surface.
I am looking for assembly instructions, where can I find them?
The assembly instructions can be downloaded from the respective product page, these are found under the Installation Guides tab.
Can I install the equipment myself?
Absolutely, HAGS play equipment can be assembled by anyone, but if you are a beginner, make sure you read the assembly instructions and follow all measurements, details and assembly steps carefully. Above all, make sure that you get started correctly, that you follow the different height settings very carefully, otherwise it can be difficult to change if an incorrect assembly is discovered afterwards.
Do we need to carry out an inspection after a completed installation of playground equipment?
Yes, before a play equipment is put into use, it must be inspected by a competent and independent person with extensive knowledge of the existing standard for play equipment, SSEN 1176. HAGS recommends using a certified inspector during an installation inspection or annual inspection.
What about requirements for supervision and inspection of playgrounds?
Operation and maintenance is a hugely important part for a playground to last overtime and also be reasonably safe when used. Care and maintenance of play equipment and surface coverings must take place routinely and according to the supplier's instructions.
There are 4 different types of supervision and inspection:
- Installation inspection
Carried out before a playground is put into use, carried out by an independent and competent person. HAGS recommends using a certified inspector for an installation inspection or annual inspection.
- Routine visual inspection
HAGS recommends at least supervision once a week. With this supervision, the idea is to be able to detect obvious risks that may have arisen through, for example, vandalism.
This supervision should be carried out by staff or people who are near the playground or work within the organisation that owns the playground.
- Function control
At least once a quarter, equipment must be checked, primarily from a functional point of view, then any wear, broken parts, etc., must be detected.
This check should be carried out by staff or people who are near the playground or work within the organisation that owns the playground. Good if those people have some knowledge of the requirements in SSEN 1176, but above all a little more practical and technical knowledge.
- Annual inspection
A thorough review of equipment, spaces and shock-absorbing surfaces is carried out by an independent and competent person.
HAGS recommends using a certified inspector for an installation inspection or annual inspection.
Is assembly included in your prices?
No, it is not included, but we can provide prices for installation work and assembly.

Do you monitor your Carbon Emissions?
Yes, the HAGS reports Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions according to the GHG Protocol methodology. The base year for this calculation is set as 2023.
Direct emissions- Scope 1 arise from the combustion of fuels at site or mobile sources owned or supervised by the company. These emissions also include emissions resulting from technological processes or escaping refrigerants.
Indirect emissions- Scope 2 arise from the consumption of imported electricity, heat, process steam and cooling. HAGS calculates Scope-2 emissions using two methods. The location-based calculation method considers the average energy intensity of the grid to which the energy consumer is connected. The market-based calculation method, on the other hand, highlights the informed choice of energy supplier by presenting emissions calculated according to the supplier-specific intensity.
In 2023 the Scope 3 emissions were not included in our calculations due to the complexity and difficulty in obtaining accurate data from external sources. We prioritized Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, which are directly related to our operations and easier to monitor and reduce.
In 2024, the HAGS Group completed the process of mapping, verifying, and calculating its carbon footprint in Scope 3, taking into account data from plants in Poland, Sweden, and the UK. The period for which the company’s greenhouse gas emissions were calculated is the year 2024.
This marks a significant step towards a more comprehensive understanding of our overall environmental impact.
How does your organization consider the entire lifecycle of products in your design process?
HAGS new product development process is split into different milestones from the initial idea development to final market release. At each milestone the approval includes a review of materials used, processes required, any life cycle maintenance requirements etc. HAGS has the principle of embedding sustainability principles as part of the companies DNA.
How do you incorporate principles of 7 R´s: rethink, refuse, reduce, reuse, repair, recover and recycle into your design practices?
Rethink: HAGS steps back and regularly thinks about the type of business we want to do and how we manufacture our products and what impact has these on the environment.
Refuse: HAGS refuses:
- to purchase excess of materials
- materials that can harm the environment and people
- materials with short life lasting
Our investments and partnerships are based on the environmental, quality, and economic aspects. Many generations played with the same HAGS playground considering the long lifespan of our products e.g. more than 30, 40 years.
Reduce: HAGS uses materials in an efficient way during manufacturing process and designs products to optimise the material use, without compromising quality. We achieve this through optimizing sizes to minimize any waste during manufacturing. We focus on reducing energy consumption during production processes includes using energy-efficient manufacturing processes and designing products that consume less energy.
Reuse: HAGS creates products with interchangeable parts that can be easily replaced or upgraded, extending the product’s life and reducing the need for new materials. By employing modular designs, our playgrounds offer flexibility, adaptability, and sustainability, revolutionizing the way we approach maintenance and longevity. Some components when replacing can receive a new life in another function. We ensure products can be easily taken apart.
Repair: We support our customers in technical questions and by offering a maintenance guide. Our products can be easy refreshed by e.g. applying a new paint. Right now we only have a team in UK helping to refresh our long lasting products upon customer´s demand.
We ensure products can be easily taken apart.
Recover: Wood and wood-based materials together with most of our plastic based materials can easily be disassembled and sent to energy recovery.
Recycle: HAGS choose materials that are recyclable and have a lower environmental impact. This includes using recycled materials in the initial design. We implement projects which focus on keeping ahead of the market as new recycled materials become available, to continually strive to reduce the need for virgin materials.
What materials is the product made from?
HAGS products are made from a variety of high-quality materials to ensure durability, strength, and longevity. We prioritize materials that not only reduce our environmental footprint but also empower customers to make more sustainable choices.
Grounded in Nordic design, our carefully selected materials include wood, steel (82% recycled), and HPL—a blend of 70% cellulose and 30% resins. Nordic Pine, sourced responsibly from Scandinavian forests, is certified by FSC or PEFC, ensuring slow growth for compact quality.
