Revitalizing Mosshead Play Area, Bearsden, Glasgow

Project Overview

Tasked by East Dunbartonshire Council, the objective was to revamp the popular but outdated Mosshead Play Area in Bearsden. The challenge was to modernize the space while preserving its historical significance, ensuring it remained a beloved hub for local families.

Project Brief

The redesign aimed to compact the play area's footprint to manage space and enhance usability on a previously waterlogged site. Implementing wet pour surfacing with effective drainage was essential to prevent future waterlogging. The new design had to cater to a wide age range, from tots to teenagers, and prioritize inclusivity. The vision was to create a vibrant, engaging, and colorful space that would draw in families from the surrounding area.

Innovative Design Features

To meet these diverse needs, the project introduced both toddler and junior play units designed to be accessible for all abilities. The installation of accessible swings and other dynamic play equipment maximized the area's play value. True to the community's roots, the design incorporated the colors from the Bearsden coat of arms, connecting the area’s rich history with its contemporary use.

The transformation of Mosshead Play Area has turned it into a cornerstone for community interaction, blending functional modern design with historical elements.
