Bairds Avenue Play Area, Scotland
Transforming Community Play Spaces in Glasgow, Scotland
Project brief
Aiming to revitalize the existing play area within a budget of £100,000, this redevelopment project sought to create a dynamic and inclusive environment. The design needed to offer diverse play opportunities, such as climbing, swinging, bouncing, rotating, and imaginative activities that cater to various play styles including creative, cooperative, and solitary engagements.
Inclusive design
Ensuring accessibility was paramount. The design complied with the Equalities Act, incorporating features that accommodate children with a wide range of needs and abilities. This included wheelchair-accessible equipment like in ground trampolines, seesaws, and playground roundabouts to encourage participation from all children.
Community input
Community involvement was key to the project's success. Through consultations and feedback sessions, residents contributed valuable insights, steering the inclusion of specific play equipment and features. This collaborative approach ensured that the play area met the real and expressed needs of local families.
Additional features and equipment
The play area features state-of-the-art equipment designed to enhance physical activity, sensory development, and social interactions among children of all ages. Key installations include the UniMix unit for varied age groups, a UniMini crawling tunnel, a climbing net, a playground zipline for physical challenges, and sensory play equipment to enrich sensory experiences. The space also includes seating areas, picnic tables, benches, and a sheltered outdoor seating area for social interactions, alongside colorful graphics on the safety surfacing to create a visually stimulating environment.
Outcome and impact
The redesigned play area has become a cornerstone of the community, promoting not only fun and exercise but also inclusivity and social cohesion. The project not only transformed a space but also the way the community comes together, making it a vibrant hub for children and families to enjoy and engage with one another.
