WHEN OBSTACLES BECOME AN OPPORTUNITY
A disabled person only has a disability when they are faced with an inaccessible environment. Not being able to participate is a frustrating experience for anyone, regardless of age, which is why at HAGS we work to offer all children a genuine play experience. In our “Play for all” range, we have developed our play products further for increased accessibility to all or parts of the play equipment. Heights and surfaces have been adapted to facilitate play for children with physical disabilities – wheelchairs can get very close, handrails and handles are placed at various heights and many play functions can be directly adapted for the purpose.
Creating a play area where everyone can participate is not difficult. HAGS accessibility for all increases accessibility for children with disabilities. With Play For All we have built complete play areas, but have also supplemented many existing facilities. We like the latter option, as it increases the scope for interaction between children with and without disabilities. As always
with children, there are no ready-made templates for how children with disabilities play: how the equipment is designed also depends a lot on the particular situation. Reduced movement, vision or hearing require their own specific solutions. What we know from experience is that play should never be flat and boring just because disabilities are involved. All
children love challenges!
• With many UniPlay frames, it is possible to turn an obstacle into an
opportunity by usin a step or stair with good handlebars.
• By taking play elements down to ground level, all children can play freely, regardless of their disability.
• Children with disabilities often require customized play functions. Instead of choosing a standard solution, it’s worth creating a play area based on the child’s specific needs in the long run. |
